IT TAKES A VILLAGE
a support system for males and females 8 years and UP.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to support the transition of troubled and/or disenfranchised males and females into becoming productive members of our society through physical, emotional, and spiritual empowerment.
The purpose of the “It Takes a Village” and "A Village Inc."program is to develop young males and females into upstanding men and woman through mentoring, fellow shipping, and life coaching. Young men and women between the ages of 8 and up are paired with seven seasoned, adult mentors who meet weekly at the A Village Mentoring Clinic/Boxing Gym and are part of or mentoring and counseling. One of the goals of the “It Takes A Village” program is to have the young men and women experience a positive environment with a positive role model who will encourage them to make better choices in life.
The goals wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for a dedicated group of men who truly care about the existence, success and plight of the young men and women who enter the program. A mentor’s functions include:
-Teaching the mentee about a specific issue or issues that may have a negative impact on their life
-Coaching the mentee on a particular skill that may have a positive impact on their life
-Assisting the mentee’s growth by exposing them to opportunities such as community resources and networks
-Challenging the mentee to move out of his comfort zone
-Creating a learning environment that encourages, not intimidates
-Focusing on the mentee’s total development
Through the mentors involvement with these mentored youth, there has been a rise in their overall school attendance; better relationships with their parents; and a better attitude toward their outlook in life.
